The Last Defense

A Poetic Narrative

There comes a moment in every life

When intelligence has answered all it can.

When discipline can no longer carry the weight.

When influence loses its voice.

When wealth cannot negotiate.

When reputation finds no witness.

When even faith, though still alive, can only whisper—

“Lord… have mercy.”

For every man, sooner or later,

Will arrive at the edge of himself.

The proud man. The wise man.

The righteous man. The disciplined man.

Even the one who built his life brick upon brick with careful hands.

There comes a day when every defense finishes speaking.

When silence enters the room.

And Mercy waits at the door.

Many call it luck.

But luck is a dangerous word.

Or perhaps, only an illusion.

Blessings rarely arrive without a story.

There are victories whose roots were planted in secret.

There are rescues that began years before the danger appeared.

And Heaven keeps records.

Not merely of what men became—

But of who they were when no one applauded.

It remembers the vow you almost broke, yet kept.

The prayer you offered when no answer came.

The kindness you showed when no reward followed.

The truth you defended though deception would have been easier.

The tears that stained the floor when only God was watching.

The quiet consistency that never found an audience.

And just before Mercy speaks, justice remembers.

Not to destroy, but to testify.

That the man, having exhausted every argument, every explanation, and every excuse,

Falls upon the only defense he has left.

Mercy.

And what qualifies him to ask for it?

Not perfection. Not achievement.

Not the illusion that he never stumbled.

He asks simply because he is human.

Dust, breathing the breath of God.

Strong enough to dream.

Weak enough to fail.

Wise enough to build.

And foolish enough to fall.

It is that simple.

Yet somehow, that simple truth becomes terribly complicated.

For pride would rather pretend it has no need of mercy.

But the humble man knows that every sunrise is undeserved.

Every second chance is a gift.

And every open door is a testimony.

So never envy the man whose life was spared.

Nor dismiss the woman whose tears became laughter.

You witnessed the miracle,

Heaven remembered the journey.

And perhaps that is the mystery most men overlook—

Mercy is not blind.

Nor blindly granted

It only sees farther than judgment.

It remembers what the world forgot.

And when every defense has finished speaking,

Mercy has the final word.
